Questions

What is a Panchang?

The Panchang (Panchangam) is the Hindu almanac. Its five limbs are the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga, karana (half a tithi) and vaar (weekday). It also gives the times people plan around: sunrise and sunset, Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika, Abhijit muhurat and the Choghadiya.

Why does the Panchang depend on my city?

The Vedic day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, and Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya and Hora are fractions of the local day and night. Sunrise changes with the place, so choose your own city for correct timings.

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal is one eighth of the daytime, about an hour and a half, that is traditionally avoided for starting new work. Its position in the day depends on the weekday, and its clock time depends on the local sunrise and sunset.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides the day and the night into eight parts each. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered good, Chal neutral, and Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided. AstroChart shows the day and night Choghadiya, the Tamil Gowri Panchangam and the planetary Horas.
