Your Jathakam, explained
A Jathakam is drawn for the exact moment and place of birth. The Lagna is the sign rising in the east at that moment and becomes the first house; the Moon’s sign is your Rashi, and the Moon’s nakshatra is your birth star, which decides where your Vimshottari dasha starts. The same calculation gives the kundli used across India; only the name and the chart style differ by region.

What is a Jathakam?
Jathakam (also written Jathagam or Jatakam) is the Malayalam and Tamil word for a horoscope made from the time of birth, the same thing as a kundli or janam patri in North India. It records the rising sign (Lagna), the Moon sign (Rashi or Kooru), the birth star (Nakshatra) and the positions of the nine planets.
Can I see my Jathakam in the South Indian chart style?
Yes. Every chart can be switched between South Indian and North Indian style. In the South Indian square the signs stay fixed, Meenam (Pisces) in the top-left corner, and the Lagna is marked in its sign.
What details do I need?
Your date of birth, the time of birth as close as you know it, and the town or city of birth. The time is converted to universal time with the historical timezone rules of the birthplace.
Does it include the dasha and porutham?
The Jathakam includes the full Vimshottari dasha to the Prana level. For marriage matching, use Kundli Matching, which scores the eight Ashtakoota factors out of 36 and checks Chevvai (Mangal) Dosha for both people.
